What is Ethical Fashion and What Does it Have to do with Me

Whether you’re new to the term “ethical fashion” or you’ve been on this journey with us for a while, I think something we can all agree on is that ethical fashion can pretty easily get both confusing and overwhelming. We’re right there with you– you can go ahead and let that sigh of relief out. If you’re wondering “what is ethical fashion and what does it have to do with me?” you’ve come to the right place.

First off, the simplest way to define ethical fashion is consumer behaviors and production approaches that are good for people and/or the planet. This includes slow fashion, sustainable fashion, etc. Think of it as an umbrella term that lots of other smaller movements fall under.

Now, are you wondering what that has to do with you?

Well, we’re really glad you’re here, because you’re THE most important player when it comes to the fight for ethical fashion. Here’s what we mean.

Unfortunately, the norm in the fashion industry is the mass-production of cheaply-made garments made by vastly underpaid and often mistreated workers– most of whom are women. Fashion is one of the largest industrial employers of women worldwide, yet only an estimated 2% of fashion workers are paid a livable wage. That’s unacceptable.

That’s where you (aka the consumer!) come in. Consumer demand is the most powerful tool that can be used to set things right in the fashion industry. When the people buying products start thinking about the people who created them, real change happens.

Where you shop, how you make purchasing decisions, and the way you choose to vote (or not vote!) with your dollar are all massively important– but if that all feels a little overwhelming, that’s okay! You’re not in this alone.

We’ll be here every step of the way tackling the hard questions, not shying away from sticky topics, and having so much fun along the way. Thanks for being here!
